We Can Do It Ourselves

Written by Fernando Dunn II

Do-it-yourself has been a cultural phenomenon over the past decade, particularly in the USA. Where us able-bodied people once opened our wallets to professional assistance, we now go back to our roots of saving money and obtaining that sense of accomplishment that was not available before.

Do-it-yourself does not stop at home improvement. DIY encompasses the repair, creation, or modification of anything that you would normally want to seek professional resources for. It is our personal involvement in our personal lives.

We are now coming back to the understanding that we can do it ourselves. The vast sharing of information and materials has made this reintroduction of DIY possible. The amount of resources available for tackling do-it-yourself projects is unbelievable. Some of those sources are online forums and articles, books, other do-it-yourself'ers, television, and even recruiting professionals solely for consultation. The internet and television are by far the most used method of sharing and obtaining information.

To date, I have completed a few projects that I was once intimidated by. Most of the projects have been electrical, plumbing, automotive, and a bit of flooring. If it had not been for the DIY community, I would have never even considered facing these projects. After seeing so many great examples and success stories from the community, I am able to conquer problems with confidence, professional results, and self-satisfaction.

This confidence and satisfaction can be attained by anyone through taking on certain projects themselves. In the past, it was expected. It was the cultural norm. Now, it is a cultural phenomenon, helping us return to where we came from. We can do it ourselves and so can others if we show them how.

What I’m working on is a web community where members can submit tutorials and information on DIY projects that they have tackled, whether it is home improvement, automotive, health and fitness, etc. Other resources are horribly designed, hard to use, or extremely ad-oriented.

I want to provide great information to the community in an easy to digest manner.
